Under the Table
Situated directly beneath The Round Table, Under the Table was the basement section of that bar and carried its own character. Down a flight of stairs, patrons found a dimmer, livelier scene with music and dancing – essentially, the Round Table’s rowdier underbelly. The proprietors leaned into the name’s pun; being “under the table” hinted at both its below-street location and the state of some of its customers after a night of revelry. It often featured live music or DJs – as noted, in 1981 the management was recruiting singers and duos to perform in Under the Tableopen.clemson.edu. Students might start upstairs then slip down “under the table” as the night heated up. While it shared history with The Round Table (and closed around the same time), Under the Table deserves its own mention for the many nights Clemson folks spent dancing in that basement. Together, the Round Table and Under the Table formed a two-level hub of 1980s nightlife that is fondly remembered even though both have long since closed their doorsopen.clemson.edu.
