Nick’s Tavern & Deli

Opened on February 26, 1976, Nick’s Tavern & Deli is one of downtown Clemson’s most storied barsclemsonwiki.com. By the 1980s, “Nick’s” had firmly established itself as the cozy pub where everyone from students to professors felt at home. The tavern was founded by Nick Vatakis and Milton Antonakos, two members of the local Greek community, who took over a former bar called Pat Belew’s Gold Nugget and made it their ownclemsonwiki.com. In the early years, the two owners became legendary characters: Stocky, apron-clad Nick would sit in the back with a cigar, ready to lend a sympathetic ear, while Milton – tall with a salt-and-pepper mustache – would bellow at any unruly behavior (“Get down off that table! What do you think this is?!”)clemsonwiki.com. This good-cop/bad-cop duo set a tone that made Nick’s both welcoming and orderly. The bar gained a reputation as the “liberal arts bar” – a mellow, intellectual pub hangout as opposed to a rowdy party barclemsonwiki.com. It didn’t even serve liquor; like many Clemson bars of the time, Nick’s stuck to beer (boasting 15 taps and many bottles) and wine, plus a deli menu of sandwiches, soups, and snacksclemsonwiki.com. You could grab a draught and a deli sub, play a game of pinball in the corner, or chat with a mix of grad students, townies, and professors. Nick’s was the place to have a thoughtful conversation over a pint – you were far more likely to find people debating literature or football strategy than doing keg stands. In 1985, as Nick’s health declined, he sold the tavern to a Clemson biology professor, Dr. Ken Wagner, and his wife Esther, who pledged to uphold the bar’s traditionclemsonwiki.com. (At the transfer-of-deed party, all the regulars signed the back of the deed as witnesses – a very Nick’s touch!) One fun fact: if you look at the Nick’s sign, the backside of it is actually the old Gold Nugget sign – the frugal Greek founders simply flipped it around and painted “Nick’s” on the other side!clemsonwiki.com. Nick’s thrived well beyond the ’80s (celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2006 with a huge reunionclemsonwiki.com), and it remains a sentimental favorite. Though it finally closed its doors in the 2010s, Nick’s is remembered as Clemson’s oldest tavern, a place where generations of Tigers shared laughter, ideas, and countless pitchers of beerclemsonwiki.com.
